Climate and outdoor learning at GT
“If children don’t grow up knowing about nature and appreciating it, they will not understand it. And if they don’t understand it, they won’t protect it. And if they don’t protect it, who will?” Sir David Attenborough
All classes use our field to explore nature, learn about the environment and develop a sense of place, outdoor skills and knowledge.
Reception and Year 1 visit the field each week to complete a wide range of outdoor learning activities.
All classes from Year 2 to Year 6 visit the field once a half term. Our classes follow our outdoor learning progression map.
We also use the field for sports days, P.E. lessons and special events throughout the year.
Our school field in Autumn
We are working with the Green Schools Project to learn about the climate emergency and how to work towards being carbon zero and more sustainable.
In Year 5 we have been learning about becoming zero carbon and the causes of climate change such as pollution in the air caused by cars etc. We went to the school field to find examples of the effects of climate change and used our photography skills to take these wonderful pictures.
Year 4 Nature Through Children's Eyes film project December 2024
At George Tomlinson we have solar panels on the roof above our Year 5 corridor. They were installed in 2013 and help us use the power of the sun and light to generate electricity.
