Enrichment at George Tomlinson
Our curriculum is ambitious and extends beyond the National Curriculum. This includes a broad range of enriching experiences and opportunities both within and beyond the school day. This includes developing specialist skills, such as having specialist teachers for P.E and Coding.
These opportunities include a variety of school trips, participation in charity events, enrichment activities and opportunities to encourage aspirational thinking.
We are proud of the fact that we have been awarded the School Games Platinum Award. The award recognises our commitment to the development of competition across the school and into the community.
Visitors into School
Visitors have a valuable role to play and provide a link to the local community. Each year we are visited by local politicians, local religious leaders, parents sharing their skills and occupations and athletes.
Educational Visits and Residentials
School trips and visits are an integral part of the education of children at George Tomlinson Primary. We value the opportunities such visits offer our pupils and the commitment of staff and adults undertaking them. Trips include class visits aimed at bringing learning alive and providing first-hand experience.
All classes visit our local library and a London Art Gallery and/or cultural space each year and these include:
Reception - Tate Modern
Year 1 - National Gallery
Year 2 - William Morris / Little Angel Theatre
Year 3 - Tate Modern
Year 4 - Portrait Gallery
Year 5 - Tate Britain / Stratford East
Year 6 - Hayward / Barbican Galleries
Children in Years 5 and 6 take part in residential visits. These are planned to provide new and exciting experiences. Children in Year 5 have the opportunity to have residential visits to St Davids in Wales or Abbey Home Farm and Year 6 take part in a challenge residential at Root'd where they experience orienteering, climbing, abseiling, team building activities, archery and lots more.
Outdoor Learning and the Green Schools Project
As a school we are very fortunate in having our own green space field and all classes visit the field once a half term. Reception visit the field every week in all weathers.
Our pupils take part in outdoor learning activities such as hide and seek, shelter building, tool skills, lighting fires or environmental art. Each activity develops intra and inter-personal skills as well as practical skills.
Opportunities are built into the curriculum for children to continue learning beyond the classroom including undertaking fieldwork and enquiry based-work in the local area.
In Year 5, our pupils take part in a comprehensive climate education programme Zero Carbon Schools with The Green Schools Project.
Zero Carbon Schools is a cross-curricular programme for Years 4 – 8 with links to science, geography, maths, English, PSHE and art.
As a result of the programme, our pupils:
- Learn more about climate change and feel empowered to take action in their school community
- Develop leadership, communication, problem solving and teamwork skills
- Calculate an estimate of their school’s carbon emissions
- Lead meaningful projects to reduce the school’s carbon footprint
